Powerback 24: Leave Some of Your Passions as Just That
Show Notes Transcript

Outside of being a business owner, I'm going to guess that there's a handful of hobbies that you really enjoy doing. It could be working out or gardening or traveling. Everyone has their own thing that brings them a little extra joy in their life. And then sometimes comes this turning point where we make the things that bring us so much happiness into a chore or into something that we have to perfect.

It actually took me a little bit of time to record this episode because I'm thinking to myself, "What are some of my hobbies that I love to do that I feel like I don't have to put a hundred miles an hour behind,?" And I realize in this exercise that I actually struggle with that a little bit. So this episode is just as much for me as it is for you.

This week, I want you to take your power back by letting some of your passions be just that—passions. Things that you enjoy doing, things that allow you to refocus your mind, or maybe even not think much at all—and be content with them just being something that you love to do.

Something that I really love doing and most people would be like, "What?" But it's kind of mind-numbing for me and that's painting my house. There's something about just getting my hands dirty and rolling the paint on the wall and watching the transformation literally happening in front of me. And that oh-so-beautiful moment where you get to peel the tape off of the ground or off of the edge and you just get this nice crisp, clean line. It's, it's so satisfying. I literally just got done painting the trim in our basement and I was scooting my ass around, you know, all the different corners and I was just thinking, "Oh, I just really enjoy doing this."

It's Powerback time on The Gutsy Podcast. Each week, we bring you five minutes of condensed inspiration to reclaim the courage and momentum you've given away. You've got big things to do, so let's get your power back.

Speaker 4:

Outside of being a business owner, I'm going to guess that there's a handful of hobbies that you really enjoy doing. It could be working out or gardening or traveling. It actually took me a little bit of time to record this episode because I'm thinking to myself,"What are some of my hobbies that I love to do that I feel like I don't have to put a hundred miles an hour behind,?" And I realize in this exercise that I actually struggle with that a little bit. So this episode is just as much for me as it is for you. This week, I want you to take your power back by letting some of your passions be just that—passions. Things that you enjoy doing, things that allow you to refocus your mind, or maybe even not think much at all—and be content with them just being something that you love to do. Something that I really love doing and most people would be like,"What?" But it's kind of mind numbing for me and that's painting my house. There's something about just getting my hands dirty and rolling the paint on the wall and watching the transformation literally happening in front of me. And that oh-so beautiful moment where you get to peel the tape off of the ground or off of the edge and you just get this nice crisp, clean line. It's, it's so satisfying. I literally just got done painting the trim in our basement and I was scooting my ass around, you know, all the different corners and I was just thinking,"Oh, I just really enjoy doing this." I have the music up loud. I love it. I don't really have to put a whole lot of mental thought behind it and it gives me a little bit of an escape time. But, guess what? I'm not going to be perfect at it ever and I most certainly am not going to start a painting business because if I had to paint, I would lose interest in it rapidly. When I start painting, it's usually I'll wake up and I'll say to my husband,"Hey, I'm going to paint today." And he's like,"Okay, well what do you need?" This is where the fine line comes in though because sometimes we mistake the things that we'd love for the things that we feel like we need to do or need to make money at doing. If you absolutely love volunteering in your community, that doesn't mean that you have to start a nonprofit organization. If gardening is your thing, you just love being under the sun and digging your hands into the dirt, you don't have to open a greenhouse. If swimming is a hobby of yours, you don't have to start training to be an athlete. You can do all these things just simply because you love to do them. Ironically, right before I started to record this episode, I got an email from Valerie Burton who is one of my favorite authors and she sends out this weekly video called PQ's, which is what she calls powerful questions. And ironically, her topic this week aligned exactly with what we're talking about and she says that"You don't have to be good at everything." In fact, it's important to have a goal, to have something that you're just not good at it all but just love doing it for the sake of doing it. I'm a horrible singer, but you can bet your ass that I am belting out on my way to work when a great song comes on. And I'm not going to be applying to Juilliard for dancing, but I can break down a great song on a Saturday night.

Speaker 3:

Sometimes, we induce stress in our lives by assuming that we have to be perfect at something or have to be really amazing at it for us to even spend time doing it. And then sometimes that equates into not doing it at all. And at that point, you're just robbing yourself of literal good old fashioned pure joy.

:

So I want you to take a look at all the different hobbies and things that you love to get yourself into and ask yourself,"Am I doing this because it's fun and I just enjoy it or am I doing it because I enjoy it... but I'm also putting too much pressure on myself to be something that I'm not?" I want you to give yourself permission to do something and be really awful at it, like just not good. Maybe you like to take those group painting classes where there's one particular subject everyone's painting the same thing and maybe you just really love that. You're like hanging out with your friends. You're having a glass(or three) of wine. You're just having a great time. But at the end of every class you're painting looks nothing like the instructors. Guess what? Who gives a shit? If you enjoyed what you were doing and you enjoyed the company that you were with, then keep taking the painting classes. You don't have to become Bob Ross to be able to have a great time. Give yourself permission to just enjoy life without so much pressure on every aspect of it. Join me next week on The Gutsy Podcast. We're gonna talk about reducing stress with one literal action. Just one thing that could drastically reduce your anxiety level and help you start feeling more free and in control. Until then, follow The Gutsy Podcast on Facebook and Instagram and if you're loving the show, we would absolutely love, love, love if you would go over to whatever platform you're listening on and leave us a review. We read every single one of them and we'd love to know what we're doing great and if there's a topic that you want to hear more of, drop us a line as well. You can also follow me personally on Instagram@ThatLauraAura. See you next time![inaudible].
